Newcastle's city centre is a fairly compact area, and so many of the town's main tourist sights are within walking distance. However, Newcastle is quite a hilly town and so unless you are fit and able you may prefer to make use of the city's excellent public transport system. Avoid driving into Newcastle unless you absolutely have to for the city centre is a mass of twisting one way streets - so you're bound to get lost! Eldon Square is considered by many to be the city centre, and it is this area of the city that we will use as a reference point in our guide. It is here that you can find the Eldon Square Shopping Centre and the older Grainger Market. Just to the east of Eldon Square is the excellent Laing Art Gallery, one of Newcastle's most famous tourist attractions. To the south-east of the city centre you will find Newcastle's Cathedral, Castle and Maritime Centre. And to the south-west of the centre are the Newcastle Discovery Centre and the Newcastle Arts Centre. The Tyne River, famous for the six bridges that span it, is also located to the south of the city centre. To the north of Eldon Square is the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, with its excellent museums and art gallery. And to the north-west of the city centre you will find the home of Newcastle United Football Club - a passion shared by all natives of the city! The town of Jarrow, famous for the Jarrow Crusade, lies about 5 miles east of the city. It is well worth a visit for its long and interesting history, which you can find out about at Bede's World.
