Maidenhead is a town that is located within the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. This royal borough is located within the county of Berkshire. The town of Maidenhead lies on the banks of the River Thames. Maidenhead is located about twenty-six miles west of the area of Charing Cross, which is within the City of London.
In 1280 there was a bridge built across the River Thames and this replaced the ferry that used to carry people across. The new bridge meant that one of the road that is known as Great Western Road had to be diverted so that the traffic could make use of the bridge. This bridge is what actually led to the growth of the town of Maidenhead and it is now a popular stop for coaches that are on journeys between London and Bath. The bridge was replaced in 1777 with a more modern bridge and this is the bridge that is still used today. In 1777 the bridge cost the council in the region of nineteen thousand pounds to build.
The town of Maidenhead offers visitors and local a wide range of facilities which includes a good level of high street shopping, a luxurious shopping centre, a eight screen cinema complex, a swimming pool and also a bowing alley.
The Maidenhead Citadel Corps, which is part of the Salvation Army, was opened in the mid 1880's. The Maidenhead Citadel Band was founded in 1886 and the bandmaster was William Thomas and he actually went on to be the Mayor of the town. This band still plays a major part within the Salvation Army and they have an active role within the town.
