It is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury and a popular tourist hotspot. Despite the fact that it was heavily bombed during World War II, many of the ancient buildings remain and have been well preserved, including the cathedral. Beyond the cathedral itself, there are also many other sights to see and enjoy in Canterbury, including museums and galleries. Canterbury is also home to a host of different shops and stores, offering ample opportunity for shopping. Historic river boat tours are also offered.
Canterbury is a town in the county of Kent and sits on the banks of the river Stour. The town has been a settlement for hundreds of years, going back to well before the Romans invaded Britain. Canterbury cathedral is one of the oldest cathedrals in the UK and the site witnessed the murder of Thomas Becket in 1170. After this date, pilgrims from across the world have made their way to the city and this was the subject of Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales". Historians visiting the town can examine buildings dating back over the years, including a city wall from the time of the Romans.
Apart from visiting the cathedral, there are plenty of other things to do when you visit Canterbury. There are regular plays in the local theatre and there is a lot of musical culture in the city, which is still host to many big names from the music industry.
The Canterbury Festival is an arts festival that takes place during October, so if you are visiting whilst the festival is taking place, be sure to book your hotel accommodation in plenty of time to ensure you have somewhere to stay. The festival features theatrical arts, a wide array of music and also comedy.
Shoppers in Canterbury will find a good selection of shops to visit, from the usual chain stores through to smaller local shops. The main shopping centre is the Whitefriars development but you can find smaller, specialist shops in the St Dunstan's area of the city amongst other areas.
You can also find a wide selection of pubs, bars and restaurants to relax in at night. Or you could watch a play at one of the city's theatres or catch up on the latest movies at the cinema.
