Aberdeen is located in Aberdeenshire and is the third largest city in Scotland. This seaport is commonly also known as Silver City and Granite City due to the amount of grey stone that was used in the construction of many of the older buildings throughout the city. Aberdeen is known for being home to many museums and art galleries, all of which are worthy of a visit. There are also many theatres and concerts in the local area to enjoy as well. Visitors will find there are ample restaurants, eateries, shops, pubs and hotels to accommodate their needs in Aberdeen.
Aberdeen is the third largest city in Scotland and has been in existence in some form for at least eight thousand years. Robert the Bruce granted it the honour of being a Royal Burgh (similar to the English charter for a town) which helped to develop the city's economy. In more recent times, the discovery of North Sea oil has helped to keep Aberdeen thriving.
The city is home to two universities which mean that it is boosted by a large student population, helping to keep the city thriving and vibrant. This means that you will find a wide range of bars, pubs and restaurants here. There are also several shopping centres in Aberdeen and these attract shoppers from a large area.
Golfers can test their game at one of the four public golf courses in the area and the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club regularly hosts the Open Championship. Other popular sports in the city include football and rugby union.
As befits a large city, you'll find a number of festivals taking place during the year. These include the International Youth Festival as well as jazz and literature festivals. You can also find venues that still host traditional Scottish Ceilidhs if you want to experience a flavour of times past.
You can explore the history of Aberdeen and many of the buildings in the city can trace their roots back to the Middle Ages. In the summer, you may prefer to wander along Aberdeen's sandy beaches, although the temperatures aren't often conducive to sunbathing.
Because of its importance as a trade centre, Aberdeen has plenty of hotels and other accommodation to choose from and unless your visit to Aberdeen coincides with one of the major events that take place in the city, you should have no trouble finding somewhere to stay in Aberdeen.
