Although the city suffered a great deal from bombing during World War II, much of the city has since been rebuilt. The city of Bristol dates back to medieval times and has been a manufacturing centre throughout history due to its unique location at the confluence of the Rome and Avon rivers. There is much to see and do in Bristol, including the floating harbor, the local zoo, the world famous suspension bridge, Bristol Cathedral and King Street, which is the theater district of Bristol.
Bristol is an important port and city in the south west of England. It is located on the River Avon and is also on the River Severn estuary. It is the sixth largest city in England and has all the features and facilities that you would expect from somewhere this large. The city received a royal charter back in 1155 and became its own county in 1373. Much of the prosperity of Bristol can be linked to its status as a port but more recently it has also been involved in the aircraft industry, where it played a prominent role in the supersonic airliner Concorde.
The University of Bristol is one of the highest regarded universities in England and is home to a large number of students throughout the year, giving the centre of the city a lively feel.
Shoppers will be spoiled for choice in the city. As well as a plethora of city centre shops, there is the recently built Cabot Circus shopping centre as well as the Cribbs Causeway shopping and leisure centre. Between them, these make Bristol a major shopping destination, attracting visitors from miles around.
Each August, the city is home to the International Balloon Festival, with hundreds of hot air balloons taking off at the crack of dawn and in early evening. There are mass ascents of hot air balloons, which make it worth setting your alarm clock early to witness them. Or if you prefer a more leisurely start to the day, the evening sees a selection of hot air balloons glowing to accompanying music. There are so many visitors to this festival that the nearby Clifton Suspension Bridge is closed to traffic during the Fiesta for safety reasons.
