In addition, Leeds also offers many other sights and activities to enjoy as well. The city has a wide range of architecture, including Victorian and Georgian architecture. Visitors will also find numerous cafes, museums, restaurants and theatres to enjoy while in town. In addition, Leeds is quite close to the Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Dales. Visitors planning a trip to Leeds should plan to book accommodations well in advance. There are numerous hotels, but Leeds is quite popular, so it is a good idea to plan early.
Leeds is located on the river Aire in West Yorkshire. The city has a population of over 400,000 people and is one of the largest cities in England. The city was mentioned in the Domesday Book and can trace its roots back to at least 730 AD. Much of the city's growth came at the time of the Industrial Revolution when it was responsible for handling almost half of England's exports to the rest of the world. Leeds was an important city at this time and was involved in the textile, leather and pottery industries as well as making parts for steam engines.
Today, the city is home to several universities which help to give it a lively, modern feel. It is also one of the UK's largest financial centres as well as being the home to several internet related companies, helped by the fact that the city was the first in the UK to have full broadband coverage. It is an important internet hub and it is thought that around a third of the UK's internet traffic passes through the city.
Shoppers will find everything they need in the city, from small individual boutiques through to the biggest department stores. The Victoria Quarter is one of the popular shopping arcades and dates back to 1900. Today, the stores it houses read like a Who's Who of the retail industry. Even if you don't go to shop, you can admire the stained glass ceilings that connect the different sections together.
Although Leeds may not immediately spring to mind as a tourist destination, it was awarded the title of "UK's favourite city" by Conde Nest Traveler magazine and has been given a number of other similar awards. The city attracts over ten million visitors a year.
