Many people who work in London today commute from Maidstone. Visitors will find there is plenty to see and do in Maidstone. One of the more popular attractions is the Maidstone Museum and Bentlif Art Gallery, which offers a local history collection as well as a small art gallery. The Maidstone Carriage Museum is popular as well. In addition, make a point to see the All Saints Church, which dates back to the 14th century. There are also plenty of dining and entertainment options in Maidstone as well as overnight accommodations for visitors.
Maidstone is the county town of Kent and has been a town since 1549 when it was first granted a town charter. Much of the town's history and prosperity is linked with the river Medway, which runs through the town and has provided it with trade routes over the centuries. The river Medway is still an important feature of Maidstone but nowadays it is used more for pleasure than business. When you walk along its banks you can see some of the houseboats that are being used or you can watch the river festival which takes place each towards the end of July each year. The festival is the largest one in the town and attracts hundreds of boats and thousands of onlookers. The boats arrive during the week before the festival and stretch along the river from the town as far as Lockmeadow Millennium Bridge. There are also a number of music stages with live bands during the event and an annual raft race. Due to the popularity of this event, it pays to book your hotel room in plenty of time if you are visiting Maidstone for this event.
Maidstone's shopping centre is one of the top five in the south east of England and includes the recently opened Fremlin Walk centre with over fifty shops as well as cafes and coffee shops to relax in between shops. Or you could check out the Lockmeadow Centre which has a cinema and market square as well as plenty of shops.
Sports are well catered for in the town, which is home to football, hockey and cricket teams as well as sailing and rowing clubs.
