There are several districts in Sheffield, which is one of the largest cities in not only Britain but also Europe. Nearly two million people live within the metropolitan area. There is plenty for visitors to see and do while visiting Sheffield, including Devonshire Quarter, which has become one of the trendiest and most popular shopping centers in the area. Other popular attractions include cinemas, theatres, museums, galleries, parks and a variety of gardens. Skiing and ice skating are also popular wintertime activities in the immediate Sheffield area. Ponds Forge, a massive swimming pool, is also a popular attraction.
Sheffield is a city of over half a million people located in South Yorkshire. The area the city stands on has been occupied by humans since at least the last Ice Age.
Historically, the city has been associated with the production of steel and the knives it produced were mentioned in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. In more recent times, it was responsible for the development of stainless steel as well as the earlier development of crucible steel.
Snooker fans will recognise the city as it is currently the venue for the World Snooker Championships whilst football fans still flock to the Sandygate Road to watch a game at the world's oldest football ground.
The city's musical roots continue at the Sheffield Arena which is home to a number of large concerts as well as sporting events. Sheffield is also the home of the National Centre for Popular Music which is a museum devoted to modern music and culture.
Shoppers in the city head towards the Meadowhall shopping centre, located to the north east of the city and constructed on the site of a former steelworks. It is the sixth largest shopping centre in the UK and hosts almost 300 stores as well as cafes and other places to relax during a hard day's shopping.
If you get a sense of deja vu when you wander around the city, it could be due to the fact that movies such as The Full Monty were filmed here.
One of the more unusual festivals held in the city is Documentary Festival, an annual event that features documentary films and is the leading event in the UK for this section of the television industry, attracting entries from across the globe.
