Located in Merseyside, Liverpool has become well known for its excellent nightlife. In 2008, the city received the title of European Capital of Culture. Liverpool is also the home basis to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. A number of musicians call Liverpool home including Gerry and the Pacemakers, Echo and the Bunnymen, Frankie goes to Hollywood and of course, The Beatles. There is a fairly large national museum in the city as well as the oldest Chinatown in Europe. The Grand National Horse Race takes place just outside Liverpool in Aintree. Liverpool lies on the banks of the river Mersey and is home to over four hundred thousand people. It is the home of the famous Liverpool docks which at one stage handled forty percent of the UK's imports and exports. It is also the place where the Manchester Ship Canal meets the ocean. The port doesn't attract as much trade nowadays but is still the third busiest estuary in the UK. It is also an important port and almost three quarters of a million passengers a year use it between the city and Ireland and the Isle of Man.

Liverpool has two cathedrals, the most famous of which is Liverpool cathedral, which is the fifth largest cathedral in the world. Its construction was one of the largest building projects initiated in the twentieth century and the final design was as a result of a competition that attracted over one hundred designs from leading architects of the time. In the late summer, the cathedral is home to the Liverpool Shakespeare Festival.

The Beatles are arguably the most famous exports from Liverpool and the band was formed in the city in the late 1950's, although they were not called the Beatles until a couple of years later. There are many tourist attractions in the city that are related to the group, including the Cavern Club, one of the first venues that the band played in.

The city was a European Capital of Culture in 2008 and there are plenty of arts and musical events throughout the year. Shoppers are also well catered for, with Liverpool One being the most recent development offering a multitude of stores as well as a cinema, offices and apartments.
