543 Babbacombe Road, Torquay, TQ1 1HQ Show on map 0.72 miles from TorquayTorquay is located in Devon in the West Country. Since the 19th century this seaside town has been referred to as the English Riviera. Visitors will find Torquay on the English Channel. There are several gorgeous sandy beaches in the immediate area and the region is known for its high water quality. The warm climate makes it possible for palm trees to add the finishing touch to this charming seaside resort. Besides the beaches, there are also many other sites to see in the immediate area, including Kent's Cavern. There is also a large zoo in the immediate vicinity as well.
The town of Torquay is located on the southern coast of Devon and is its county town. It is home to around 64,000 people although this number swells considerably in the summer tourist season. It has been a popular seaside resort since the nineteenth century and has long been famous for its healthy climate. It is often referred to as being the English Riviera. The area itself has been occupied for almost half a million years and ancient hand axes have been found locally. Torre Abbey is probably the oldest surviving building in Torquay and was founded as a monastery in 1196. It was turned into a private house in the late fifteen hundreds and stayed in private hands until 1930 when it was purchased by the borough council. Nowadays, the building is used as an art gallery as well as housing a replica of Agatha Christie's study. Because of the age of the building, there are many reports of ghosts including one of a headless monk.
Torquay has a selection of 9 beaches for you to choose from and these all have high standards of water quality and other facilities. Close to the town is Kents Cavern, a cave system that was created around two million years ago and has been occupied by people many times over the years. The site has been home to a number of important archaeological discoveries. There are regular tours of the cavern as well as a number of displays and special events such as a "dig" for children to participate in.
The coastal location of Torquay means that it regularly hosts sailing events and regattas, so if you plan to stay in the town during Torbay Week you should book your hotel accommodation in good time to ensure your place. The regatta includes lots of sailing vessels as well as a number of races between the ships.
