There are many attractions to see in Gloucester, including Gloucester Cathedral. If you are a Harry Potter fan you will not want to miss it because some of the filming took place there. The 18th century docks are also a popular attraction as is Prinknash Abbey. Other popular attractions include a Roman toilet, located just outside Boots, as well as the local museum and art gallery, which features exhibits that date back to Roman days in Gloucester. The local area is also excellent for taking relaxing country walks.
Gloucester is the county town of Gloucestershire and is located on the banks of the River Severn, which runs through the heart of this cathedral city. The city has been in existence since at least Roman times and was granted a charter by King Henry II back in 1155.
Another reason that Gloucester grew was the fact that it was an inland port. The Gloucester and Sharpness canal links the city to the River Severn. The docks are now converted into a mixture of shopping, pubs, bars and apartments. They are also home to the National Waterways Museum.
Gloucester has been home to the cathedral since 681 AD. One of its claims to fame is that King Edward II is buried here. Another is that a number of scenes for some of the Harry Potter movies were filmed in the Cathedral, the sense of familiarity as you walk around the grounds is probably because you really have seen it before.
The city is the home of one of the country's top rugby union clubs and the grounds at Kingsholm are used for the matches. During the summer, there is a cricket festival at King's School. There are also a number of leisure facilities in Gloucester, notably the central GL1 leisure centre. Slightly further out of the centre is the ski and snowboard centre where you can practice your skills on the dry ski slopes.
The Guildhall in the centre of the city hosts many live bands as well as a cinema, bar and art gallery. During the year, there are a variety of festivals and other events including the Rhythm and Blues Festival and a medieval fair during the summer.
