The elegant street was designed and built in the 1830s by John Dobson and Richard Grainger, the two architects who were responsible for much of the city's Victorian development.
And it is named after local man Earl Grey, who was Prime Minister from 1830 to 1834. He is best remembered for the fact that during this time he passed the Great Reform Bill of 1832.
This work is commemorated by a 135ft monument at the top of the street, the summit of which is topped by a statue of Grey who looks out over his city.
Midway down Grey Street is Newcastle's Theatre Royal, an excellent venue that regularly receives good reviews. Most notably in autumn of each year the Royal Shakespeare Company visits the theatre for several weeks.
