    Grainger Market

Newcastle's delightful Grainger Market can be found between Grainger Street and Market Street, just south of the city centre.

The market dates from the 1830s when it was the biggest undercover market in the whole of Europe. The building was built in the classical style and it still retains a certain Victorian elegance.

Today Grainger Market is predominantly a fruit and vegetable market, although there are many other interesting stalls as well.

Perhaps the most famous of these is the "Marks and Spencer Original Penny Bazaar", the smallest Marks and Spencer outlet in the world.

It is a fascinating example of how the famous chainstore started life in the 1830's, when they operated under the slogan "Don't ask the price - everything's a penny".

Granger Market takes place daily except Mondays. Stalls are open from 8am to 5pm.
