The "New Castle"

Newcastle Town Guide, Sketch of the remains of the New Castle, 14K
the keep today
The remains of the "new castle" which gave the city its name can be found on St Nicholas Street, located to the south east of the city centre.

Also known as Castle Garth, the "new castle" was built in 1080 by Robert Curthose, the illegitimate son of William the Conqueror.

The original castle was built of wood and so in the 12th century Henry II rebuilt it in stone - and it is the remains of this re-built version that can still be visited today.

It is the Castle Keep that has survived, the majority of which dates from the 1170's. However, some parts, for example the roof and the battlements, are more recent 19th century additions.

Inside the Keep you can visit the Norman Chapel, the Public Hall and two suites that were once the Royal quarters.

You can also climb up a steep staircase onto the roof for some wonderful views over the city, although the steep, narrow steps mean that only the fit and healthy should attempt the climb.

The Castle Keep is open daily except Mondays, but opening hours vary according to season so do check in advance. Admission costs around £1 for adults.
