    Grasmere

The picturesque village of Grasmere is situated on the shores of Lake Grasmere, to the north of Lake Windermere.

The village is of course most famous for its connections with William Wordsworth, and hundreds of visitors arrive each day to visit his former home Dove Cottage.

The village is also where the famous poet is buried, his grave is in the pretty churchyard of St Oswald's Church.

Dove Cottage and The Wordsworth Museum

When Wordsworth was walking with his sister one day, he came across a 17th century inn called the Dove and Olive Branch.

Legend has it that they both fell in love with the place so much that they bought it and made it their home - Dove Cottage.

Wordsworth lived here with his sister from 1799 to 1808, after which he lived at nearby Rydal Mount.

The house has been restored to how it would have looked when Wordsworth worked here, clearly demonstrating his belief in plain living.

Next door to Dove Cottage is The Wordsworth Museum, which houses all manner of memorabilia relating to the author, including original manuscripts.

The Cottage is situated a couple of miles outside the village, however, with all the crowds that it attracts these day, it isn't as remote as it once was!

Dove Cottage and The Wordsworth Museum are both open daily from 9.30am to 5.30pm. Admission costs around £5.00 for adults.
