It's a charming house with no two rooms the same, as you would expect in a house of this character. Each room has its own appeal and features, from cosy beamed rooms to high Georgian ceilings. The rooms are various in size, but all offer the same comforts.

All the bedrooms have en-suite facilities with bath and shower, luxury Molton Brown toiletries, colour television, hot beverage tray, mineral water, radio, telephone and hairdryer. The bedrooms are strictly non-smoking and there are no family rooms.

The Restaurant at Temple Sowerby House
'This is food that deserves wide appreciation' - Lancashire Life

The Restaurant at Temple Sowerby House has been awarded an AA Two Rosette Dining Award for the quality, imagination and consistency of the menus created by Head Chef, Ashley Whittaker. The menus blend contemporary and traditional British styles whilst featuring the best of seasonal, local and garden-grown produce.

Temple Sowerby House, Penrith, 13K

The superb range of local produce includes lamb from the fells, beef and pork from nearby farms, game from neighbouring estates, seafood from the north-western coast and regionally produced cheeses.

The detail and attention given to the preparation of our dishes mean that special diets can generally be easily catered for, especially if prior notice is given.

There isn't a strict dress code for dinner, but smart casual is appropriate.

To complement the seasonal menus, the Wine List has been personally chosen to reflect an interesting range, drawn from an international market.

Private Dining at Temple Sowerby House

The house lends itself to entertaining and we enjoy arranging special occasions and events.

Adjacent to the Restaurant and opening out onto the terrace and garden, is the private dining room, known as The Garden Room. This is a perfect setting for special occasions and family celebrations.

Temple Sowerby House, Penrith, 7K

A party of up to 24 guests can be seated at one large dining table, whilst a maximum of 40 can be accommodated if the Restaurant is also used.

Menus are planned during discussions with you taking into account the occasion and time of year. One of the Reception Rooms can be reserved privately for you to greet your guests on arrival. We are also happy to help with place cards, table plans, flowers, a cake and perhaps a few special surprises too.

The Garden at Temple Sowerby House

The hotel stands in two acres of traditional walled gardens divided into three sections.

Temple Sowerby House, Penrith, 15K

The first part, nearest the hotel, is made out to a croquet lawn surrounded by flower borders. If the weather is fine, the adjoining Terrace is a very pleasant spot for drinks before dinner.

The second part contains the old greenhouse, which we hope to restore to its former glory. Languishing there at the moment is an old peach tree, which begins to flower during the Spring, the fruit being ready to pick in late Summer.

The third part beyond the beech hedge is rather a wilderness at the moment but we have plans to develop this area, perhaps into a meadow habitat for wildlife.

A herb garden was created in the Summer of 2004 to provide a constant source of fresh herbs for the Kitchen. Several types of Rosemary, Mint and Parsley are grown together with Wormwood, Tarragon and Sweet Cicely.

The garden walls provide sheltered surroundings for cherries, apples, pears and blackberries, whilst raspberries are grown in abundance together with redcurrants, white currants and blueberries.
