Horse racing in the historic border city of Carlisle dates back to at least the 16th century, and some are of the opinion that it may even date back to Norse times. But one thing is for sure, in 1904 horse racing in Carlisle moved to the current Blackwell site when the Duke of Devonshire failed to allow the renewal of the lease on the land at The Swifts.

In recent years Carlisle Racecourse has fast become one of the premier attractions in the region, with extensive redevelopment of existing facilities and the introduction of numerous additional ones, plus, with a significant increase in race day visitors, there really is every reason to visit us and see all that takes place at the Sporting Heart of Cumbria!

2010 sees an action packed racing calendar, with a number of feature races and family days. Feature meetings, such as the famous Bell and Plate Day on 23rd June, including the £30,000 Lloyd Motor Group Carlisle Bell and £30,000 Cumberland Plate, is Carlisle's most prestigious day's flat racing!

There's the CFM Summer Family Festival on 3rd July, another fabulous family day out, rounded off with a spectacular concert by Jools Holland, with special guest vocalist Alison Moyet, and a firework display!
