Whitehall District

SW1
Nearest Tube: Charing Cross or Westminster

Whitehall is a long avenue stretching south from Trafalgar Square to Parliament Square. Originally the area was best known for its connections with Royalty for this was the site of Whitehall Palace, the permanent residence for English Monarchs until it burned down in 1698.

Then in the late 18th and 19th centuries it was the administrative heart of the British Empire, and various statues dotted around the area remember this period.

Today, as part of the district of Westminster, Whitehall is the home of British Government. Along this avenue you will find many of Britain's Government offices including the Welsh and Scottish Offices, the Foreign Office, the War Office, the Ministry of Defence and the Treasury.

Also along Whitehall you will find the Horse Guards Building and the Cenotaph, and adjoining the avenue is Downing Street. Nearby are Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben.
