The city of Newport is located within the region of Vale of Glamorgan within the country of Wales. The city is located on the banks of the River Usk. Newport is located between Cardiff and Bristol. Newport is the capital of culture and it is the largest urban area within the historical county of Monmouthshire. Newport City Council governs Newport.

Newport has a population of about one hundred and forty thousand one hundred and this makes it the third largest city in Wales. The population within the built up area is one hundred and sixteen thousand one hundred and forty three.

The city of Newport is mainly a low lying area, however there are a few hills. The areas to the south and the east of the city are low-lying areas that are flat and these areas have some of the housing estates and industrial areas. The outskirts of the city on the eastern side are characterised by the rolling hills that make up the Vale of Usk. There is a ridge that is known as the Ridgeway, which runs through the city, and it has good views of surrounding areas.

Newport has a moderately temperate climate and the weather rarely stays the same for more than a couple of days at a time. The city of Newport is one of the warmest and sunniest locations within the United Kingdom. Newport is a sheltered location that helps to protect it from the extreme weather. Newport also benefits from the warming effect of the Gulf Stream. Newport tends to have warm summers and cooler winters.
