Stansted is a small village in Essex, close to the airport of the same name. It has been occupied since at least Saxon times and has been fortified through the ages to defend against invaders. Mountfitchet Castle was originally an Iron Age fort and in recent years has been reconstructed as an earth and timber castle as close as possible to the original design. The centre also includes reconstructions of some of the original houses.
The town's roots as an airport date back to World War Two when an airfield was constructed close to the village. The site was subsequently developed into the Stansted Airport we know today. The airport is approximately thirty miles from London and is the third busiest airport in the UK with scheduled and charter flights to a wide variety of destinations.
