Milton Keynes is a new town in the south east of England. It was founded in 1967 and is unique in Britain for having its main streets laid out in a grid format. The site of the town was chosen to be within easy reach of most of Britain's major southern towns and cities. As with the other "new towns" in the UK, there are lots of open spaces designed into the town, so you are never far from parkland and lakes. The town was also designed to incorporate cycleways from the outset and these often run alongside the roads, although the routes are more often used by leisure cyclists because they can meander more than commuters prefer.
Most of the original buildings in Milton Keynes were subject to height restrictions, so the town doesn't feature many skyscrapers or other similar buildings.
The Grand Union Canal runs through the town and the banks of the canal have been landscaped to integrate with the town's design. There are also many parks in the town and it is estimated that the urban area has over twenty million trees.
The National Bowl is an open air arena which is designed as an amphitheatre. It is used for regular large concerts and other events and is the fourth largest arena in the UK. The town is also home to the Milton Keynes Theatre, which is billed as Britain's most popular theatre due to the frequent sell-out shows that it hosts.
