Penrith
Although technically outside the boundaries of the Lake District National Park, Penrith is still a popular base for touring the northern region of the park.
The town has a particularly interesting history having passed from Scotland to England in the 11th century and being a site of conflict ever since.
To find out more about the history of the town and the area, visit the interesting museum on Middlegate, which is open daily.
