| Our History... From the middle of the 18th Century, the most important inn in Alresford has been The Swan, which catered for the Turtle and Venison Dinners of the Baliff and Burgesses, Meet Hunt Breakfasts for Hampshire Hunt and Balls in the Assembly Room. Aside from these services The Swan was the principal coaching inn of the town and by 1875 the coaches between London and Southampton used The Swan as a daily stage each way. London and Southampton used The Swan as daily stage each way. London bound travellers had breakfast while the horses were changed in the stable at the rear, the coach having driven into the yard through the now blocked doorway and hall of the hotel. Travel "outside" to London then cost 5/-. Overnight accommodation was provided for the gentry and The Swan Tap was available for their grooms. |
