Come to the Swan at Hay, The hotel for all seasons.

Hay-on-Wye (or Y-Gelli in Welsh) is a charming market town on the Welsh Border. Nestling in its calm river valley at the foot of wild mountain scenery, Hay's maze of streets and alleys, their plan little changed from mediaeval times, hide the dozens of antiquarian bookshops that have made it 'the town of books'.

An ideal centre for day trips to remember, Hay is at the heart of the territory of the ancient Marcher Lords whose ruined abbeys and castles dot the surrounding countryside. So start the day with one of our legendary Welsh breakfasts - then it's time to explore!

Nearby attractions to satisfy all tastes include the spectacular show caves at Dan-yr-Ogof, the priceless Mappa Mundi in Hereford and guided tours of the Royal Welsh crystal factory in Rhayder. Stay with us at The Swan at Hay for just a little longer and perhaps you'll have time to discover the hidden valley below nearby Hergest Ridge with its fabulous Rododendron garden, or to visit Blaenavon's Big Pit where you can experience the thrill (some would say terror) of a trip underground to the coal face!
Sightseeing, 14K
Still hungry for more? What about an excursion to the Elan Valley and its four huge dams? To visit the dams in wintertime is to visit a wonderland when spray from the overflowing water turns, as if by magic, into a glistening frosting on the trees far below. Or drive up to the foot of the mighty Hay Bluff on the outskirts of town. The views alone make your trip worthwhile but the Bluff is also a mecca for paragliding, so settle back and watch the aerial ballet - or maybe take a lesson yourself!Paragliding, 7K
Back at the hotel our chefs will be busy preparing the menu for the evening. From the à la carte menu in our Cygnet Restaurant to bar meals in the informal Mallard Room the emphasis is on fine food prepared with care. Vegetarian menus are, of course, available in either restaurant. Whichever menu you chooose from, our home-made bread and cakes, fresh local produce and garden herbs make for meals to remember.

Although our staff work hard, you don't need to. For a relaxing day, look in at our local markets; cattle on Mondays and general on Thursdays. Explore the antique shops and the craft centre or perhaps take a stroll down to the riverbank to see the graceful birds that have given our hotel its name. Maybe you'd like to try fishing? After all, the Wye is famous for its salmon and the hotel does have access to over five miles of the Wye's north bank.

However you choose to spend your days come back to The Swan at Hay for a little luxury, a great deal of comfort and good food with fine wines. Our eighteen guestrooms all have en-suite facilities with colour television and radio, tea and coffee making facilites, hair dryer and safe. They are all individually furnished and some have special touches, such as the canopied bed.Bedroom, 7K

For centuries this corner of Hay has been the site of the town's principal coaching inn. The present building was erected in 1821. In 1987 the builders were back, but this time to begin the transformation of the old Swan Inn into the luxurious 3-star hotel that you see before you. Under the guiding eye of your hosts, the owners Rosemary and Colin Vaughan, the work was done with great care, providing all of the facilities expected in a modern hotel - without losing any of the elegance of the original building.
