The Hotel

A stroll around the Lily-pond, or just over the border into Wales might be your idea of the perfect pre-prandial activity. But there are few better places to tuck into tea and cake than on the hotel's terrace. It catches the full force of the afternoon sun, and on fine days you'll find all our guests out there soaking up the heady rural atmosphere.

Inside the hotel plenty of fresh flowers, log fires at every turn (in winter!), and a distinctly laid-back style, add to the sense of warmth and well being.

Pen-y-Dyffryn was chosen as "Country Hotel of the Year" by The Good Hotel Guide, and "Rural Retreat of the Year" by The Which Hotel Guide. We were also nominated as Johansen´s "Best Value Hotel", and Harden´s Hotel Guides gave us their top marks throughout, a distinction granted to only 27 hotels in the whole of Britain, Ireland, New York and Paris! Who are we to argue?

The star of the piece, however, is the hotel's hillside setting facing the Welsh mountains to the west, promising some of the finest sunsets in the land. "Sundowners" are a must!

A retreat and a hotel... all in one.

Dining

The restaurant, with its huge, south-facing sash windows, is central to the Pen-y-Dyffryn experience. We have a long established AA two rosette good food award, and the food is healthy, locally sourced, and tends to the use of organic produce. We even have our own tame deerstalker, and game features regularly on the menu along with more traditional delights.

Bedrooms

Sleep, uninterrupted sleep "the sleep that knits up the ravell'd sleeve of care" is a priority at Pen-y-Dyffryn. With only wildlife to break the silence, thick stone walls, no passing traffic and posture sprung beds throughout; here are the ingredients for a refreshing nights slumber. We want you to wake revived and refreshed, with a hearty appetite for a healthy Shropshire breakfast, fortified for a full day's enjoyment.

Things to Do

Although blessed with an overwhelming sense of peace and serenity, you're never far from civilisation at Pen-y-Dyffryn. This English/Welsh borderland positively breathes history.

There are four major National Trust properties within half an hours drive of the hotel; Powis Castle, Chirk Castle, Attingham Hall and Erddig. Each merits a day visit in itself. And just a little further afield is Bodnant, regularly voted by National Trust Members as the nations favourite gardens.

The medieval timbered towns of Chester and Shrewsbury are only a short drive, and both are major tourist attractions in themselves. The small and friendly market town of Oswestry is three miles away, hosting the biggest street market in Shropshire on a Wednesday and a Saturday.

The Ironbridge Gorge, a World Heritage site, is about forty-five minutes drive, and the Snowdonia National Park is about the same distance in the other direction.

Wales's highest and most spectacular waterfall, Pistyll Rhaeadr, is a "must do", as are two of Thomas Telford's spectacular aqueducts, Llangollen and Chirk, perfect for those who prefer walking on the flat! Lake Vyrnwy, Lake Bala and Shropshire's own Lake District at Ellesmere are also close by.

Excellent coarse and fly fishing is available on several of the lakes and rivers in the area, and don't forget to look out our "Walking" page - Pen-y-Dyffryn is in superb hill-walking country and the hotel has numerous free walking leaf lets, all starting a the hotel front door.
