MERMAID HOUSE

Mermaid House is so central that one can walk to the market in seconds, yet it is surprisingly quiet. From the bedroom window guests look out over a garden and roofs to Windmill Down, a grassy rural hillside with trees, hedgerows, and cattle in the summer.

GETTING HERE

.
Totnes is on a main rail route from London via Exeter, and about six miles from the A38 "Devon Expressway" between Exeter and Plymouth. Flights from home and abroad use Exeter International Airport. There are public transport links to other towns in the South Hams, and a stunning ferry journey to Dartmouth, passing Agatha Christie's Greenway home en-route. There are two steam railways within five miles.

PARKING

We provide guests with a permit which allows free use of a number of car parks in Totnes; it can also be used in other South Hams towns, such as Dartmouth, Kingsbridge, Modbury and Salcombe.

TOTNES

.
Anybody who does not already know Totnes will find it fascinating. The High Street is lined with architectural delights, mainly Elizabethan and Georgian. It climbs from the Plains, beside the River Dart, up to The Narrows, near the Norman motte and bailey castle: if lucky, you can catch glimpses of some exquisitely moulded plaster ceilings through first floor windows.

The parish church is built of gorgeous red sandstone and has a beautiful interior. Most of the shops are small, individual businesses, with hardly a "chain" outlet to be seen, and the market bustles on Fridays and Saturdays. As far as refreshments are concerned, there are pubs, cafes, tea-rooms, wine-bars and restaurants to suit all tastes; indeed we consider Totnes to be one of the best small towns in Britain for food.

All in all, Totnes is a wonderful place to visit and Mermaid House is in the very heart of it!
