TOTNES |
| Anybody who does not already know Totnes will find it fascinating. The High Street is lined with architectural delights, mainly Elizabethan and Georgian. It climbs from the Plains, beside the River Dart, up to The Narrows, near the Norman motte and bailey castle: if lucky, you can catch glimpses of some exquisitely moulded plaster ceilings through first floor windows. The parish church is built of gorgeous red sandstone and has a beautiful interior. Most of the shops are small, individual businesses, with hardly a "chain" outlet to be seen, and the market bustles on Fridays and Saturdays. As far as refreshments are concerned, there are pubs, cafes, tea-rooms, wine-bars and restaurants to suit all tastes; indeed we consider Totnes to be one of the best small towns in Britain for food. All in all, Totnes is a wonderful place to visit and Mermaid House is in the very heart of it! |
