Clapton Village

'Come and feel on top of the world.'

For as its name suggests, this little village standing at almost 700 feet above sea level, a couple of miles south-west of Bourton-on-the-water, is just about as bracing a place as can be found across the Cotswolds. And with panoramic views eastwards from Stow-on-the-Wold's wooded slopes and the Icomb Hill, past the Rissingtons and away southwards towards Wychwood Forest and Burford Downs, Clapton has few rivals as a scenic viewpoint throughout the eastern wolds. That doyen of Cotswold travellers, HJ Massingham, discovered tiny Clapton over half a century ago, and was deeply moved by what he found.

At last, after droning about the country like a questing cockchafer in the twilight of not finding exactly what I wanted - I did find it, the incredibly true landscape of the mind's eye.

Standing on the edge of Clapton today, allowing the eye to linger over the chequerwork of fields, farms and woodland, we can savour the same landscape that prompted Massingham's response.

For those who wish to combine a visit to Clapton-on-the-Hill with a leisurely stroll, the lane down to the River Windrush is signposted 'Unsuitable for Motors' provides an ideal diversion. The return journey may tax the leg muscles, but the narrow, roughly-surfaced lane is a nature lover's paradise.
