    Orientation in Liverpool

The city of Liverpool stretches for over 10 miles along the banks of the River Mersey, in the north-west England.

The city's main tourist attractions are spread out across the city, and whilst it is possible to walk between many of them, most people may prefer to use the city's extensive bus network.

A good place to start any visit to Liverpool is the Albert Dock, which has recently undergone extensive renovation.

This is where you will find, amongst other things the Merseyside Maritime Museum, The Beatles Story and the Tate Gallery Liverpool.

Opposite the Albert Dock is Pier Head, which is where you will find the Museum of Liverpool Life and the famous Royal Liver Building.

Pier Head is also the place to visit if you want to do the traditional Liverpudlian thing and "Ferry 'cross the Mersey".

To the east of Pier Head, towards the city centre, you can visit Matthew Street and the Cavern Club where The Beatles used to play.

Further north-east again, on William Brown Street, is the excellent Liverpool Museum and Walker Art Gallery.

And Liverpool's two cathedrals can also be found to the east of the city - the Metropolitan Cathedral (Roman Catholic) on Mount Pleasant and the Anglican Cathedral on Hope Street.
