    Royal Liver Building

Liverpool Town Guide, Royal Liver Building, 2K

Liverpool's famous Royal Liver Building (pronounced lie-ver) can be found just off New Quay on Pier Head.

The building dates from the early 20th century when it was built by the Royal Liver Friendly Society, an organisation that families contributed to in order to cover future funeral expenses.

It takes its name from the legendary Liver Birds that are the symbol of Liverpool, and from which the city is believed to take its name.

Appropriately enough the twin towered building is topped by a pair of 18 feet high copper Liver birds, offering a truly arresting landmark on the banks of the Mersey.

The symbol of the liver birds re-appears all over the city, and they also feature in the city's crest. Legend has it that if the birds ever leave Liverpool, the city will collapse.

Tours of the Royal Liver Building are available between April and September, but by appointment only.
