    Metropolitan Cathedral

Liverpool Town Guide, Metropolitan Cathedral, 2K

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, located on Mount Pleasant to the east of the city centre, is Liverpool's Roman Catholic cathedral.

The architect behind it was Sir Edwin Lutyens, who originally had much grander plans than today's building.

Lutyens wanted to build a Cathedral to rival St Peter's in Rome, however as Liverpool's fortunes began to decline in the early 20th century the money ran short and so his ambitions couldn't be realised.

Finished in the 1960s, today's circular Cathedral is nevertheless still very impressive, and the unusual shape has earned it the nickname the "Mersey Funnel".

The Metropolitan Cathedral is open to the public daily from 8am to 6pm. The city's Anglican Cathedral can be found to the south, along Hope Street.
