Edinburgh Town Guide |
Like every major city, Edinburgh has an excellent range of museums to choose from, including the renowned Royal Museum of Scotland. |
Located on Chambers Street in the Old Town, the Royal Museum of Scotland is housed in a magnificent Victorian mansion complete with iron clad interior. Built in the late 19th century by the renowned architect Francis Fowke, it is the UK's biggest museum outside of London. And once inside the huge building, the collections are equally impressive. The exhibits are displayed thematically, and include collections of decorative arts from around the world, an Egyptian collection, a Natural History section, a Geology exhibition and a section dedicated to Technology. Exhibits to look out for include the French silverware collection, Britain's oldest flying contraption and the oldest steam locomotive in the world. And there are also several temporary exhibitions put on each year. Adjacent to the main museum there is also a smaller museum, which specifically houses the huge number of Scottish exhibits, some of which have never been on display until recently. This section of the museum tells the history of Scotland and its people in a series of lively displays. The Museums are both open daily but opening hours, and even price, varies according to day so check in advance. |
