Edinburgh Town Guide |
Edinburgh is divided into two distinct parts - the Old Town and the New Town. The Old Town is the original medieval Edinburgh that grew up around the Castle and Holyrood Abbey, with the Royal Mile running between the two. |
The Old Town part of the city is characterised by narrow twisting streets and alleyways that are known as closes and wynds - a wynd is an alleyway that is open at both ends whilst a close is one that is only open at one end. Many of Edinburgh's most popular tourist attractions are located in the Old Town including Greyfriar's Kirk, John Knox's House, Gladstone's Land, Parliament Square and of course the Castle. There is an Old Town Information Centre located in Tron Kirk on the High Street section of the Royal Mile. |
