Firstly Edinburgh Castle has several exhibitions, and then as you head down the Royal Mile there is Gladstone's Land, the Huntly House Musuem and John Knox's House.

It is also in this part of town that you will find the Royal Museum of Scotland, which is located on Chambers Street.

More specialist museums in Edinburgh include the Museum of Childhood, the Writer's Museum, the People's Story and the Russell Collection of Keyboard Instruments in St Cecilia's Hall.

In the New Town there is the excellent Georgian House in Charlotte Square or the Edinburgh Experience in the City Observatory on Calton Hill.

This list is by no means exhaustive so you will no doubt come across plenty of other smaller museums as you explore the city. The vast majority will be excellent, and most will appeal to children.
