Edinburgh Town Guide |
The Grassmarket, along with the Royal Mile and Cowgate, is one of the main routes through Edinburgh's Old Town. |
The street takes its name from the hay market that once took place on the site. Although there is no longer a market there, the Grassmarket is still a busy, thriving road. However there is also a more gruesome side to the street - for many years it was one of Edinburgh's main execution venues. It was also the haunting ground of body-snatchers Burke and Hare, and was the scene of several violent riots. Today the street is, of course, more peaceful and has left the horrors of the past behind. Tourist attractions on Grassmarket include the Royal Museum of Scotland, and nearby is Greyfriars Kirk, home to the legendary Greyfriars Bobby. Grassmarket is also now one of Edinburgh's main night spots with numerous pubs and clubs lining the street, so it is a good place to head in the evening if you want some entertainment. |
