    St Paul's Church

St Paul's Church can be found in the town of Jarrow, as part of the Bede's World complex.

A monastery dedicated to St Paul was first founded on this site in AD681.

It quickly gained a reputation for craftsmanship and ecclesiastical learning, and most famously the Venerable Bede lived and wrote here in the late 7th and early 8th centuries.

Viking raiders attacked the monastery in AD794, and within 50 years the monastery had dwindled and closed.

It was then revived in AD1074, but like monasteries all over the country it was forced to close during the reformation of the 16th century. The ruins that you can see today are the remains of this revived monastery.

St Paul's Church that you see today started life as two separate Anglo-Saxon churches that have since been joined together by the tower.

It is particularly significant in that it contains the oldest surviving dedication stone of any church in England, dated April 23rd AD685.

And it also has some of the oldest stained glass in the whole of Europe, along with some rare sculptures from the original monastery.

St Paul's Church is open daily, and is regularly used for services.
