    St Nicholas Cathedral

Newcastle's Cathedral can be found on St Nicholas Square, to the south-east of the city centre.

The first church to be established on the site was built in the 11th century. And even today the oldest surviving part of the Cathedral dates from 1175!

However, the majority of the Cathedral that you can see today dates from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

It is one of England's smallest Cathedrals, however it is no less impressive for that fact. For example, it is architecturally significant for the lantern tower that crowns the 200ft spire.

Dating from 1470 this is the oldest surviving, and one of the most ornate, lantern towers in the country. The purpose of these open-sided towers was so that a lantern could be hung there as a beacon for travellers trying to find their way at night.

The interior of the Cathedral is equally impressive, for throughout the ages the city's wealthy industrialists and merchants have ensured that the city Cathedral was appropriately furnished.

There are free tours of the cathedral available every Wednesday at 11.30 am from Easter to October. Otherwise the Cathedral is normally open to the public daily, although times may vary so do check in advance.
