Upton District

E7, E13
Nearest Tube: Upton Park

Upton was originally a small hamlet that was situated several miles to the east of The City. The hamlet dates from at least the 13th century and it remained sparsely populated until the beginning of the 18th century.

Then during the 18th century the district became particularly popular with Quaker families and the population expanded. But it wasn't until the industrialisation of the 19th century that the area around the village became developed.

Once industrialisation had reached the district it soon became a popular working class residential area, and the name Upton was given to the whole district.
