Carnaby Street

W1
Nearest Tube: Oxford Circus

Carnaby Street, which runs parallel to Regent Street, was first laid out in 1680. The name comes from Karnaby House, which was situated there. Initially this was a residential street, but by the late 19th Century it was predominantly shops.

The first clothes shop was opened in 1957 and soon lots of other clothes and accessory boutiques had opened. By the 1960s the street had become world famous and synonymous with young fashion.

In fact, it even entered the Oxford English Dictionary where it was defined as:

Carnaby Street n. Fashionable clothing for young people.

The boutiques are still there, but the street isn't as fashionable as it once was and for a while the street was associated more with touristy trash than with fashion. But the area is pedestrianised and so offers a bit of a rest from the traffic of the surrounding area, and once more it is becoming ultra trendy and the place to shop.
