"The loveliest spot that man hath ever found" William Wordsworth
The Lake District is an area of around 880 square miles in the county of Cumbria, in the north-west of England.
As the name would suggest the area is characterised by its lakes, over a hundred in all, that were carved out of the landscape during the last ice age.
And the steep slopes of England's highest mountains surround these lakes.
This combination offers one of the most scenic and picturesque districts in the UK, its beauty immortalised in the works of William Wordsworth.
Attracting thousands of visitors each year, the area is a haven for walkers and nature lovers.
However there is also plenty to do for the less energetic - from a boat trip on Lake Windermere to a visit to the home of Beatrix Potter.
