|"The loveliest spot that man hath ever found" |
||The Lake District is an area of around 880 square miles in the county of Cumbria, in the north-west of England.|
As the name would suggest the area is characterised by its lakes, over a hundred in all, that were carved out of the landscape during the last ice age.
And the steep slopes of England's highest mountains surround these lakes.
|This combination offers one of the most scenic and picturesque districts in the UK, its beauty immortalised in the works of William Wordsworth.|
Attracting thousands of visitors each year, the area is a haven for walkers and nature lovers.
However there is also plenty to do for the less energetic - from a boat trip on Lake Windermere to a visit to the home of Beatrix Potter.
