Telford, located in Shropshire, is the largest town in the immediate area. The city is actually one of the newest towns in the area. It was built during the 1960s and consequently brought together several market towns, farms and villages. Telford is an English new town located in the county of Shropshire. The town was named after the famous engineer, Thomas Telford, who was responsible for the construction of the Ellesmere Canal in the county as well as a number of major road building projects. The town of Telford incorporates the Ironbridge Gorge, which is the location of the first iron bridge in the world and was built in 1779. The importance f the bridge is acknowledged by the fact that it is a World Heritage Site.
Telford Shopping Centre covers fifty acres and is one of the largest shopping centres in England, attracting an estimated 15 million shoppers each year. The centre is in the middle of the town itself and is home to almost 200 shops as well as cafes, restaurants and a cinema. One of the centrepieces is the Telford Time Machine which is a gigantic clock, covering most of Sherwood Square.
Close to the shopping centre is Telford Town Park, which includes a large lake as well as the Maxell Cherry Gardens where you can relax. There are also a number of children's play areas in the park, including slides and an assault course. Next to the park is the Ski Centre, which has a dry ski slope for you to practice skiing and snowboarding on.
Just outside the town is The Wrekin which overlooks Telford as well as offering views across the Shropshire countryside. It rises to a height of 1335 feet above sea level.
