The carvings are thought to have been made by a group of stonemasons from the Middle East whilst they were visiting England during the Crusades. A lot of the stonework was covered during he seventeenth and eighteenth century and the church was of a neo classical style.

During the early part of the nineteenth century restoration work was carried out on the church and the decoration that dates back to the Norman times was rediscovered. The area of Victoria Park opened in the town in 1908 and it covers an area of about thirteen acres. This park is Edwardian and located at the side of the river.
