South Shields is the oldest town in Tyne and Wear and is situated at the mouth of the River Tyne. Dating back to Roman times, today South Shields is a town of some size and offers much to visitors. One of the most popular sites in South Shields is the Roman Fort which has been reconstructed. In addition, there is a museum and art gallery as well as a traditional farmers market. No visit to South Shields would be complete without stopping by the seafront, where visitors can explore parks, a promenade and amusement arcades as well as live entertainment.

South Shields is a town by the coast that is located with the region of Tyne and Wear. It is located at the mouth of the River Tyne and has a population of about ninety thousand and the town forms part of the metropolitan borough of South Tyneside. The metropolitan borough of South Shields also includes places such as Jarrow, Hebburn and Whitburn to name a few.

The town is home to the campus for South Tyneside College. South Shields also hosts one of the two main maritime training centres that are in the United Kingdom. The maritime training centres have a wide range of facilities that includes a marine safety training centre and a simulated ships bridge that is useful for training the deck officers. The maritime college also hosts a planetarium and an observatory and both of these are very popular with visitors and local schools. The observatory was used for about twenty years before it was deemed redundant in 2008. The college offers a wide range of training courses and flexible vocational courses.

The schooling within the local area is regarded as very good and this is reflected within the continuing improvements within the school result and the independent inspections.

The town of South Shields has a vast amount of attractions and facilities for both local residents and visitors alike. Some of these attractions include the reconstruction of a roman fort that actually forms part of the world heritage site of Hadrian's Wall. The town also hosts the Customs House theatre and art venues.
