South Shields is the oldest town in Tyne and Wear and is situated at the mouth of the River Tyne. Dating back to Roman times, today South Shields is a town of some size and offers much to visitors. The observatory was used for about twenty years before it was deemed redundant in 2008. The college offers a wide range of training courses and flexible vocational courses.

The town of South Shields has a vast amount of attractions and facilities for both local residents and visitors alike. Some of these attractions include the reconstruction of a roman fort that actually forms part of the world heritage site of Hadrian's Wall. The town also hosts the Customs House theatre and art venues.
