The village of Plockton is a very picturesque location located on the shores of Loch Carron. The villages face the east which means that they face away from the prevailing winds and this together with the North Atlantic Drift enables the village to have a mild climate and this allows cabbage trees that are a bit like palm trees to grow.
A lot of the houses that are located in the village date back to the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The village was a planned community that is strongly based within the fishing industry and this was done in an attempt to stem the tide of people emigrating from the Highlands. Within the village there is a Church of Scotland and the Free Church also uses this church. The Thomas Telford designed this church.
The village of Plockton is a very popular tourist location and this is assisted by the fact that the village was featured in the television series Hamish MacBeth. This program featured Robert Carlyle. The village has also been used as scenes for various films including The Wicker Man and also the television series Inspector Alleyn Mysteries.
The village still has a small general store that also features a cafe. The village has a few other facilities to offer which include a newsagents, a takeaway, a craft shop, three hotels that all have pubs, a village hall and also numerous bed and breakfast establishments.
