The Scottish port town that is known as Mallaig is located on the west coast of Scotland within the area that is known as Lochaber within the Scottish Highlands. There is a local railway station within Mallaig and it is part of the railway line that is known as West Highland and this railway line was completed in 1901. The railway station in Mallaig is connected to the nearby town of Fort William. The railway line runs parallel to the A830 road, which is commonly referred to as the road to the isles.
The town of Mallaig has grown massively since the railway line was built. The town is also home to a ferry terminal that is operated by Caledonian MacBrayne and the ferries sail to the town of Armadale that is part of the Isle of Skye. The town of Mallaig is also very popular as a tourist destination.
The town of Mallaig is the biggest commercial fishing port located on the west coast of Scotland. During the 1970's the port in Mallaig was the main herring port for the rest of Europe and during this time the town took pride in being famous for its smoked kippers. Nowadays however there is only one smoke house that still operates within the town and that smoke house is owned by Jeff Lawrie, the company is known as Jaffy's and Sons.
There is an extensive learning network within the town of Mallaig that includes a large distance-learning programme that is operated through Lochaber College and this offers educational classes, leisure classes and also university degrees.
