The area on which the town is situated was a Celtic settlement that was later captured by the Romans. The Welsh chieftains took over following the departure of the Romans. There are many historical attractions in Dolgella, including an abbey that dates back to the 12th century as well as several hill forts that are in the immediate vicinity. A field known as Camlan is also thought to have been the last battle site of King Arthur.

King Arthur is a household name in the historical circles and the town offers piece of land Camlan which is the place where he fought his last battle.
