During medieval times the town grew up as a market town. Visitors will find Central Park of interest, from which the River Darent can be viewed. This 26 acre formal park is also home to the Dartford Festival which is held annually in July. Dartford heath covers more than 300 acres. The area is believed to have been settled since the Bronze Age, as artifacts have been discovered there. The Heath features three ponds as well as a variety of different habitats.
Dartford is located within the northwestern corner of Kent. It is located about sixteen miles south east of Central London. Dartford is the main town within the Dartford Borough.
The town centre within Dartford is located within a valley and the River Darent flows through this valley and also under the road that runs from Dover to London.
Dartford first became a market town during the medieval times. Nowadays the town is very much a commuter town for the area of Greater London. The town of Dartford has a great deal of history including religious, cultural and also industrial.
To the north of the town is low lying marsh that features London Clay and also the alluvium that is brought down by two rivers the Cray and the Darent. The higher parts of the town are located within the valley runs of Darent that are rather narrow.
There are several different distinct areas within the boundaries of the town. The Temple Hill estate was first constructed during 1927.
During the twentieth century the prominent industries within Dartford suffered a massive decline. This decline resulted a lot of redundancies and a high level of unemployment. The main industries that suffered included paper making, brewing, four milling and also the manufacturing of cement. The area where the Bluewater Shopping Centre is located was once the location for the Swanscombe Cement Works. Blue Circle closed the Cement Works in 1990.
