Battle is located in East Sussex approximately 8 kilometers from Hastings. The town takes its name from the Battle of Hastings, which was fought between William the Conqueror, and Harold, the King of England in 1066. An abbey was built on the site. The abbey, along with the town's strong connection to the famous battle, draws thousands of visitors to Battle each year. The town itself was literally constructed around the site of the battle, in which the Anglo-Saxon controlled England fell into the hands of Norman conquerors. Battle is a quaint English town relatively small in size and is located within the area of Rother, East Sussex. The town of Battle is situated about forty nine miles south east of London and twenty nine miles to the east is the seaside town of Brighton. Towns that surround Battle include Bexhill on Sea and Hastings.
The town of Battle is the historic site of the Battle of Hastings that took place during 1066. Nowadays Battle has a population of about six thousand and forty eight.
The town of Battle has a strong educational network in the form of two high schools that are known as Battle Abbey and also Claverham. Battle Abbey was established in memory of The Battle of Hastings and officially dedicated to the battle in 1095.
The town was built gradually around the area of the Abbey and this later established a reputation for the gunpowder that was manufactured in the area as it was of a very good quality. During the middle part of the 1700's the town had five watchmakers these were located on the towns High Street. The town of Battle, over the years, has become a very popular tourist destination.
There is a bonfire society based within the town and this is claimed to be the oldest of the bonfire societies within Sussex. The town of Battle was used as a refuge during World War One and the tunnels that were used still actually exist and they lead to various different fields and also to the cellars of Battle Abbey. The tunnels have however been deemed as unsafe and have been sealed off.
