Bangor is located about thirteen miles east of the centre of Belfast as the town is only about thirty minutes both by bus and train from the George Best Airport situated in the city of Belfast.

During 1848 the first section of the railway between Belfast and County Down was opened and this was later extended to run as far as Bangor. The extension of the railway and the railway station at Bangor opened on the first of May 1865. The railway was closed to goods trains on the twenty fourth of April 1950. On the first of June 1928 the railway station was opened in Bangor west and this station rapidly expanded the service to the suburban area around.
