Axminster, located in Devon, is a traditional market town that is situated on the eastern border of Devon. The town was founded on a hill that overlooks the River Axe. The town's market is still held weekly, every Thursday. Axminster is most well known for the carpet that is produced in the town. There is much to enjoy in the town, including a museum that focuses on the area's local history as well as a variety of independent shops and dining establishments. There are also numerous dining establishments located in Axminster as well as in the local area.

The English market town of Axminster is located on the East Devon border. The town of Axminster has been erected on a hill that overlooks River Axe and this heads towards the English Channel. The town is located within the district of East Devon. Over the years the town has been very popular with markets and there is still one held every Thursday within the town.

The town Axminster gave its name to a type of carpet. The Axminster style power loom is suitable for coping with weaving carpets that are of a very high quality and they also feature many different patterns and colours. The carpet that is known as Axminster is produced within the town however there are many different countries that are now producing it.

The town of Axminster was first recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book however the town was recorded as Aixeministra. The original name of the town actually means monastery, it can also be translated as large church by the River Axe.

Most of the history of the town can be linked to the carpet industry, which was started in 1755 by Thomas Whitty within the building that was known as the Court House that is close to the church. The completion of the earliest hand tufted carpets were marked by peal of bells which came from the parish church and this was because it took a vast amount of labour and time in order to complete them.

The railway station within Axminster was first opened in 1860 on the nineteenth of July. The railway group that is known as LSWR operated the first trains that operated on this line.
