Aviemore is a tourist town located within the Cairngorms National Park, in the Highlands of Scotland. Cairngorms National Park was once the largest national park in the British Isles and is surrounded by hills and the Cairngorms mountain range. The hills and mountainous region make the area perfect for skiing, winter sports, and hiking. Aviemore became one of the first skiing resorts established in Scotland. The chairlift for the resort is known for being erected near a reindeer herd, which is the only one of its kind in the United Kingdom. The village started out as a railway junction, then built itself up when the Highland Railway started hiring, and constructed housing for the staff and a hotel.
If being outside is not your thing head on over to the Aviemore Centre. The Aviemore Centre sits on the site where once the Aviemore Hotel and golf course stood. It first opened in 1966 and has quickly gained popularity becoming a large Scottish tourist attraction. At one time, it was known to have Royalty with visitors and Royal Balls were hosted there as well. Inside the Centre, is a full range ice skating and curling rink and is home to the Aviemore Blackhawks and Aviemore Blues hockey teams. The Centre also holds Santa Claus Land, a Santa Claus theme park, including a year round Santa who resides there. Also in the Centre you will find a theatre, cinema, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, golf, shops, fountains, a dry ski slope, a swimming pool, and a go-kart track.
